Sidewalk parking warnings now, $250 fines in October
Plus a budget hearing, a cemetery fight and a garden worth finding.
September starts quiet here and then fills in fast. Here is what changed this week and what to line up before the month gets away from us.
Delray Beach is warning drivers about sidewalk parking through September 30. Starting October 1, a vehicle that blocks or crosses any part of a sidewalk can bring its owner a $250 fine. Florida law already prohibits the practice.
The city says even a partial blockage can force pedestrians into the road. That is especially dangerous for children, older residents and people with mobility challenges. Clear sidewalks also support Americans with Disabilities Act access.
The practical check is simple: park completely inside a driveway or another legal space, with no part of the vehicle extending over the sidewalk. Tell family members, neighbors and visitors before enforcement begins. The warning period runs from August 31 through September 30; fines begin the next day.
All Seasons Delray tops out on Lyons Road
All Seasons Delray has topped out at 15650 Lyons Road, marking a construction milestone for the senior housing project. The plan calls for 153 residences: 92 independent-living units and 61 assisted-living homes, with one- and two-bedroom layouts.
Planned amenities include a pool, pub and restaurant, fitness center, art and pottery studios, medical center and multipurpose room. The project sits on 7.65 acres.
Developer All Seasons Delray LLC, an affiliate of Michigan-based Beztak, bought the site for $6.3 million in 2022 and later secured $75 million in construction financing. ANF Group is the general contractor. It expects to finish the community in the first quarter of 2028.
A denied burial plot puts city cemetery rules in the open
Kevin Mitchell says Delray Beach denied his mother a plot at Delray Beach Memorial Gardens Municipal Cemetery, where her parents, grandmother and two of her children are buried. He says the city told him to wait until after her death to reserve a plot, then said the cemetery was full. She was buried in Broward County.
The dispute joins earlier concerns about upkeep and a software error that caused some pre-purchased plots to be sold again. The city points to a $2.875 million mausoleum under construction that would add more than 2,000 spaces.
A city-funded historic survey documented more than 1,200 graves and found 94% of markers in fair-to-poor condition. The city says it expects to select a consultant to review cemetery operations and recommend improvements.
First budget hearing is Tuesday night
- When
- Tuesday, September 8 · 5:01 PM
Delray Beach's first public budget hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8 at 5:01 PM. It is part of a regular City Commission meeting.
The city has posted the agenda online through its public meeting portal. Residents can review it before the meeting for the order of business and any supporting materials. The hearing is the first scheduled public budget session, so this is the opening date to mark if city spending, fees or services are on your watch list.
Foraging at the Swinton Community Growing Project
The Swinton Community Growing Project is both a garden and a gathering place. Volunteers grow tropical plants at the Delray Beach site while building community ties around the shared work.
Foraging is part of what happens there. The project connects useful plants with the people who tend them, giving residents a local example of a growing space built around participation. The result is a community project with two clear purposes: cultivating tropical plants and bringing volunteers together.
