Lead story

Mark Wednesday, July 29: Delray in the Sky is set to bring a drone show to Old School Square and the surrounding blocks. The display is planned as a 15-to-20-minute show of 500 drones flying to music and sound effects. The event footprint includes NE 2nd Avenue from the alley to the garage bollards and Swinton Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and 1st Street. It is a rare kind of downtown night, and one worth putting on the calendar now while the date is still a couple of weeks out. (City of Delray Beach)

Across Florida

Ease off the gas: Operation Southern Slow Down is on this week

If your foot feels a little heavier on I-95 lately, this is your reminder. FDOT says Operation Southern Slow Down runs July 13 through 18 across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, with Florida combining increased enforcement and public education aimed at speed-related crashes. The state's advice is simple and worth taking: allow extra time, observe posted limits, stay out of the far-left lane except when passing and use extra caution in construction zones. It is a five-state effort, so the same guidance applies wherever your summer driving takes you this week. (Florida Department of Transportation)

Kids make a memory box this morning at the Historical Society

This one is for the young crew and it starts at 10 a.m. today. The Delray Beach Historical Society is hosting a children's workshop, Memory Box Decoupage, where kids learn decoupage techniques while creating a memory box of their own. It is a hands-on craft session with something to carry home at the end, and a good way to spend a Thursday morning if you have small hands looking for something to do. (Downtown Delray Beach)

Sips & Sisterhood pairs art and a book chat at Tartelette tonight

Tonight at 7:15 p.m., Tartelette French Patisserie & Cafe hosts Sips & Sisterhood, an evening that combines mindful art-making with a book discussion. It is the rare outing where you can make something with your hands and talk about what you have been reading in the same sitting. A nice one to bring a friend along to if a slower, thoughtful Thursday night sounds right. (Downtown Delray Beach)

Make flowers and candles at Candle Land next Wednesday

Looking a little further out, Candle Land Delray has a creative night on Wednesday, July 22 at 6:30 p.m. that pairs a floral arrangement and candle-making workshop, rolled into one. It is a pairing that makes sense for a single sitting, and one worth penciling in now if a hands-on evening sounds like your kind of midweek. (Downtown Delray Beach)
