Free Parking Wednesdays arrive as the George Bush bridge goes dark

Downtown wants you there this weekend — just don't count on the George Bush bridge to get you home.

Free Parking Wednesdays arrive as the George Bush bridge goes dark

The city's summer downtown push starts the same week a near-seven-week bridge closure reroutes barrier-island traffic — here's how to play the weekend around both.

The setup: Free Parking Wednesdays is live in downtown Delray Beach — city-owned garages and surface lots go free all day and night each Wednesday through late August, a City Commission-approved push to keep restaurants, shops and bars busy through the slower summer months, according to the City of Delray Beach. Mayor Tom Carney has framed the program as a way to support local businesses while making downtown easier to visit, whether you're coming in for dinner, shopping or meeting up with friends.

Zoom in: The first real test of the summer-downtown bet comes fast. First Friday Art Walk runs Friday, June 5 at 6 p.m. — a self-guided night through downtown galleries and studios, with artist meet-and-greets, workshops, live entertainment and June openings at the Cornell Art Museum, Arts Warehouse and Creative Arts School. The Summer GreenMarket follows Saturday morning at Old School Square.

Yes, but: Getting downtown is trickier than the city's pitch suggests. The George Bush Boulevard bridge closed June 1 for deck repairs and stays shut into late July, with its east-west traffic rerouted — much of it straight onto the Atlantic Avenue corridor.

The read: Delray is steering more people downtown at the exact moment its main detour funnels barrier-island traffic through the same streets. The weekend is worth the trip; just budget extra time on Atlantic, or park once and walk the whole night.

George Bush Boulevard bridge is closed into July

Deck repairs shut the Intracoastal crossing to cars and walkers through July 20 — there's no night or partial access.

The George Bush Boulevard bascule bridge closed to vehicles and pedestrians at 7 a.m. Monday, June 1, and stays shut through Monday, July 20, while Palm Beach County completes deck repairs, according to Boca Post. Zoom in: County engineers reviewed partial and overnight reopening and ruled both out, so the detour along Federal Highway, Atlantic Avenue and Ocean Boulevard runs continuously for the full window. Anyone who normally crosses between the mainland and the barrier island here should plan extra travel time. Boat traffic on the Intracoastal is not expected to be affected.

Where Wednesday parking is actually free

Eight city-owned facilities are covered, all day and all night. On-street spaces and private lots are not.

Zoom in: The City of Delray Beach is waiving fees at its downtown garages and surface lots every Wednesday, all day and night, from June 3 through Aug. 26. The free list covers the Old School Square, Federspiel and IPIC garages plus the Roy M. Simon, Village, Gladiola, Veterans Park and Banker's Row lots — enough to cover a dinner reservation, a happy hour or an evening event without feeding a meter. On-street spaces and privately owned lots are not included, so posted rates and rules still apply there. Read the signs before you leave the car.

Rotary's Derby party turns into scholarships

The second annual Run for the Roses at Old School Square delivers for local kids.

The Rotary Club of Delray Beach's Run for the Roses — a second annual Kentucky Derby-style celebration at Old School Square with a live race viewing, signature cocktails and a curated menu of Derby-inspired cuisine — raised more than $15,000, according to The Coastal Star. By the numbers: the haul funds 10 scholarships and essential items for nearly 100 children experiencing homelessness in the Delray Beach community. Club president Rita Rana credited overwhelming community support and called the event an investment in the future of local kids.

Utility billing office goes offline July 22-27

A platform upgrade pauses normal payments at City Hall for six days this summer — two workarounds will be open.

The City of Delray Beach will close its Utility Billing Office from July 22 through July 27 for a platform upgrade, with all office operations and online services resuming July 28. The stake: during the outage, the only ways to pay are the drop box in front of City Hall or a check mailed to the city's processing center at P.O. Box 288242, Tampa, FL 33630-8242 — no other forms of payment will be accepted until the upgrade is complete. If your water bill lands in that window, pick your lane early.

This weekend: The Downtown DDA opens the Delray Summer GreenMarket's season Saturday, June 6 at 9 a.m. at Old School Square. It's the first market of the summer schedule and the easy anchor for a downtown Saturday morning — early enough to beat the heat and still make the beach after.

On Wednesday, July 22: The Downtown DDA brings Art & Jazz on the Avenue to Pineapple Grove at 6 p.m., with live music, live mural art, kids' activities, dancing and dining in the street. It lands on a Free Parking Wednesday, so the city garages and lots won't cost you anything that night.
